The design and pricing remain the main factors of buying a car, according to recent surveys. The engine goes into the background and most drivers are limited to choose between petrol and diesel, without delving into much more. However, the engine is a vital component of any vehicle, the equivalent of a person’s heart. And their varying quality depends largely on, performance, comfort and durability of the car.
Distinctions between Ford, VW, Fiat and Ferrari
Ford has achieved the absolute Award 2013 Best engine with the 1.0 Ecoboost (turbo petrol), who also won in the category up to 1000cc. The jury highlighted the relationship between performance and consumption and also its fine touch: accelerates smoothly and and just vibrates at idle, an unprecedented combination because of mechanical three cylinders. It is available in the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max and C-Max models, and gives a great performance: 125 hp (Focus).
VW has won the trophy for Best New Engine, or the most innovative , with its 1.4 TSi (turbo petrol) with ACT or disconnection cylinder system, which shuts down two of the four when driving at constant rates to reduce consumption .It is offered in the Polo and Golf and provides brilliant results: 140 hp and 4.5 litres (Polo GT).
Fiat has won the award for Best Engine green with the 0.9 Twin Air fed with methane (is marketed in Spain in the Panda ) and Ferrari dominate among the sportiest mechanical with stratospheric V8 and V12 models 458 Italia and F12 Berlinetta ( 575 and 740 hp).
The Engine of the Year awards (International Engine of the Year Awards ), they just handed down to, can be a useful tool to know which engines have been judged the best. The jury concluded that Ford has the best small motor current offer; Ferrari, the best high power, and BMW and VW, the largest variety of good thrusters.
The committee is made up of 87 journalists from 35 countries, including two Spaniards, and assesses aspects such as consumption, performance, sound and technology. Four absolute awards and eight categories, depending on the engine are given. The first trophy is for mechanics up to 1000cc and the winner is the Ford Ecoboost 1.0 propeller (100 and 125 hp), which has Twin Air 0.9 twin turbo Fiat (85-105 hp).
At the next level, from 1000 to 1.400cc, VW Claim the first two places with the 1.4 TSi with compressor and turbo (140-180 hp) and 1.4 TSi only with turbo (122 hp). Both are offered in several models of Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW.
From 1400 to 1.800cc wins the 1.6 turbo petrol BMW and Peugeot-Citroën (102-211 hp), which continues to shine despite being one of the oldest, and is available in most compact and midsize models. The second goes to the recent 1.8 TSi 180 hp of the new A3 , Leon and Octavia .
Between 1,800 and 2.000cc, BMW dominates the new 2.0 turbo petrol (184-245 hp) equipped at 1, 3 and 5 Series, the X1 and X3 and Z4. Second place is for the VW 2.0 TSi (180-300 hp) and is offered in many models, such as the Golf GTi .
From 2000 to 2.500cc, Audi achieved the top spot with its 2.5 TFSI turbo five-cylinder 340 hp, carrying the TT RS and RS3. And Mazda second with its new 2.2 twin turbo diesel (150 and 175 hp) models 6 and CX-5 , which is the best diesel engine rated. The 2.0d and 3.0d BMW turbo diesels are third in their respective categories, while 1.6 and 2.0 TDi VW Group placed fifth. From 2500 to 3.000cc award for Porsche and its new 2.7 boxer of the Boxter and Cayman (265 and 275 hp), which anticipates the 3.0 turbo petrol BMW (305-340 hp).
In the top two prizes, from 3,000 to over 4.000cc, are engines of the most modern supercars. The first prize is for the 3.8 V8 biturbo 600 hp McLaren MP4-12C , with second place for the 4.0 V8 of 420 hp BMW M3 . On engines of more than four litres, Ferrari dominates with authority and claim the first two positions with the 6.3 V12 740 hp Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and 4.5 V8 575 hp 458 Italia .
